A Kingwood cigar pen with a high-quality 24-carat gold and chrome plated trim and a piece of Kingwood for the main pen sections. In the 17th Century, it was known as princes wood as it was used for expensive furniture. This figured wood is dense and hard but has a spectacular finish to it. It can be difficult to work with but I have overcome the difficulties in working with it and I feel this has the WOW factor with all the bling.
Mounting the wood on the lathe, hand turning to round and shape. Once shaped it needs sanding through to 400 grit and then up to 8 coatings of super glue applying. Then polished to 12000 grit using micro mesh for a super hard and durable high gloss finish. The wood needs sealing with a durable finish not the woodturners traditional friction polish or wax as these are not durable enough for daily use. Sealing the wood will prevent the natural oils from the skin staining and discolouring this beautiful wood.
These pens are big and masculine and as such will make ideal handmade gifts for men.
The Kingwood pen uses a double twist mechanism and a Parker style G2 medium ballpoint black refill available from any good stationery suppliers.
All my pens come in a presentation box as standard. With every piece of wood different, these pens make unique handmade wooden 5th anniversary, Father’s Day, Christmas or Birthday gifts.
