Whisky Cask Pen

A Whisky cask pen handcrafted from reclaimed oak whisky cask wood in my own UK workshops. Coopers made whiskey barrels although they also made buckets, tubs, butter churns, kegs, butts and pipes. This is another one of our crafts that has disappeared. The hardware has a high-quality 24-carat gold-plated trim with some black detailing.

I present this ballpoint with a certificate of authenticity, an upgraded pen box and an offcut of the genuine Ben Nevis stave making ideal father’s Day ideas.

I mount the blank on my lathe, and hand turned to round and shaped. Once shaped, it needs sanding through to 400 grit and then up to 8 coatings of super glue applying. Then polished to 12,000 using micro mesh for a super hard and durable high gloss finish. The wood needs sealing with a durable finish. The woodturners traditional friction polish or wax are not durable enough for daily use. Sealing the wood will prevent the natural oils from the skin staining and discolouring this beautiful wood.

This unusual pen has a double twist mechanism and uses a Parker style G2 medium black refill available from any good stationery suppliers.
