Recycled Oak Whisky Cask Pen

A Scotch Whisky cask pen hand crafted from reclaimed oak whisky cask wood from Speyside in Scotland. Coopers originally manufactured whisky barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, kegs, butts, and pipes. This is another one of our crafts that has disappeared.

The hardware has a high quality 24-carat gold plated trim with some black coloured fittings. This unusual design has a double twist mechanism ( twists in either direction). A Parker style G2 medium black refill is also included.

A Ben Nevis distillery stave offcut, certificate of authenticity, and upgraded box accompany this wooden ballpoint.

The Scottish oak wood is mounted on my lathe, and it is then shaped by hand tools. Once I’ve got the general form down, I need to sand it down to 400 grit and apply as many as eight coats of super glue. Then, a micro-mesh polishing system was employed to get the final grit count to 12,000. This produced an extremely hard and long-lasting high shine.

A long-lasting finish must be applied to seal the woodgrain. The usual friction polish or wax used by the woodturner is not long-lasting enough for daily use. Sealing the grain prevents body oils from discolouring this beautiful hardwood.
