A handmade bolt action ballpoint pen turned using a piece of deer antler in my own UK workshops. Deer antler shed and regrow each year so this is a natural resource with no animals hurt. The antlers offer several challenges, a hard material, expensive, hard to source and finally porous.
This antler pen styled upon a bullet and has a high-quality bolt action chrome plated trim with a copper-plated tip. The ballpoint advanced by operating the bolt-action mechanism. On top, a scoped rifle for the pen clip and a copper insert to mimic the percussion cap.
The antler needs mounting on the lathe, and hand turned to round and shape. Once shaped, it needs sanding through to 400 grit and then up to 8 coatings of Ca glue finish applying. This then needs polishing to 12000 using micro mesh for a super hard and durable high gloss finish.
The bolt action pen will make great handmade gifts for men or women who love outdoor activities. This pen uses a Parker style G2 medium ballpoint black ink refill available from any good stationery suppliers. All my novelty pens come in a black presentation box as a standard.
