This is a handmade yew wooden fountain pen set hand turned in my UK workshops on a woodturning lathe using traditional tools and techniques. The pens both have gold-plated trim and black detailing. English Yew (Taxus baccata) is an old and ancient tree with some over 2000 years old, commonly found on or near pagan burial sites. Everything from the tree is poisonous apart from the aril. Yew is rich in colour from a pale cream sapwood to rich golden browns and sometimes purple if there has been any iron.
The mechanical pencil has a twist mechanism to extend and retract the 0.7mm lead.
The wood is mounted on my lathe and turned too round and shaped. Once shaped it is sanded through too 400 grit and then upto 8 coatings of cyanoacrylate (superglue) are applied this is then polished too 12000 grit using Micro mesh for a super hard and durable high gloss finish. The wood needs to be sealed with a durable finish not the woodturners traditional friction polish or wax as these are not durable enough for daily use. Sealing the wood will prevent the natural oils from the skin staining and discoloring this beautiful wood.
The handmade fountain pen is from my Chatsworth range, it has a medium nib and is supplied with a pump for bottled inks and an ink cartridge to get you started with fine writing straight away. The pen has a postable cap so you can screw the cap onto the end of the pen affecting weight and balance if you choose.
All of my wooden desk sets come in a presentation box as standard. As every piece of wood is different in grain and figure even within the same larger piece these handmade wooden pen sets are great gift ideas and will make unique wooden 5th wedding anniversary, father's day, christmas or birthday gifts.
